Our Heritage

Our rich history is the foundation for who we are today. From a small family butcher shop, through three generations of craft butchers, Arthur Mallon Foods has continuously evolved. Our values have shaped who we are today, and our passion for ever improving craft and taste has driven our success.

Our Journey

1800s - Early 1900s

From being exporters of live cattle, to master butchers, the Mallon family was steeped in the history of cattle breeding throughout the 1800s and early 1900s. Arthur Mallon was born in the 1920s.

1930s

Arthur served his apprenticeship as a master butcher in various shops within the family domain during the 1930s.

1940s

Arthur made the brave, entrepreneurial decision to move to Monaghan and brought with him a world of secret recipes. Within a few short years, he bought out his employer, Jimmy Duffy.

1950s

Arthur makes the best decision of his life and marries Nellie, a lady from a highly respected local business family. Together, they had five children, two of whom carry on the family business tradition today.

1960s

Working all of the hours God sent, Arthur and Nellie managed to earn enough money to buy Hilden, Monaghan, where the factory is today, and they started to grow the business.

1970s

The sausage element of the butcher shop outgrows the shop itself and is moved to Hilden. With superb quality products, the sausages start to win national competitions in both the UK and Ireland.

1980s

The business continues to grow and expands beyond the local area to start supplying agents throughout Ireland. In the late ‘80’s, Mallons start selling into the national supermarkets.

1990s

Expansion continues within the business, and the establishment of the Real Meal Co. Ltd. takes place; this allowed for expansion into cooked meats, sausage rolls, curries and more.

2000s

Arthur Mallon Foods acquires Hafner’s of Dublin, the oldest sausage brand in Ireland which emanated from Northern Germany and came to Dublin in the 1800s. Matterson’s of Limerick, an iconic business in the Munster region, was also acquired.

2010s

The growth of Arthur Mallon Foods continues with the acquisition of Kearns, Olhausen’s and Byrnes. During this period, Mallons has continued success and is named Champion of Europe in a world-renowned competition in France.

2020s

Huge challenges hit the business, including an on-site fire - but through resilience, determination and community spirit, Arthur Mallon Foods rebuilds and looks forward. A new state-of-the-art production facility and Centre of Excellence open; a symbol of renewal, ambition and belief in the future.
